BN 9970 is retired |
Description: |
BN 9970 got the BN touch up paint after the BN merger but couldn't have made more than a handful of trips before BN retired all the E-8A's. Depending on what BN roster of locomotives you subscribe to, the ex-Q E-8's never actually made the BN roster. It appears there were numbers assigned for them but how many made it and for how long is sketchy. |

CB&Q E8 9971 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 13, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiles. This locomotive was built in August 1953 (c/n 18313). Usually, the CB&Q would have attached a power car to this train. The power car was a modified commuter coach with a generator, but in this case certain locomotives were modified to allow some of the power from the locomotive's auxiliary generator to be routed to the coach's lights. The air conditioning was provided by onboard Waukesha engine powered by four propane cylinders on each bilevel coach. The heat was steam. There wasn't a lot of electrical demand in those days. |

CB&Q E8 9971 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 18, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is Train #108 departing Naperville at approximately 6:53AM, a daily except Saturday and Sunday dinky (commuter train) to Chicago, making most of the local stops between Naperville and Chicago, arriving at Union Statmon at 7:46AM if it maintains the schedule. According to the CB&Q Employees Timetable #9 for the Chicago and Aurora Divisions (Effective at 12:01AM CST, Sunday, October 25, 1964), this train did not depart from the Aurora Depot, so it departed directly from the coach yard, arriving)at its first stop, West Eola at 6:40AM, and stopping at Eola at 6:43AM. |

CB&Q E8 9972 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 at Aurora, Illinjis on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sinnce the days of steam, arriving Dinkys ( commuter trains ) at Aurora reLuired the power to be turned for the return trip to Chicago. A turntable was located behind the Aurora Depot for that purpose, as seen here. In less that a year from this photo date, six Budd gallery cars with control cabs would arrive and all but eliminate this chore. |

CB&Q E8 9972 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Of interest to perhaps only CB&Q fans, this locomotive is towing three Budd galley cars and no power car. The equipment behind the third gallery car is another train on the next track. At the time of this photo, an adapted E8 or E9 could power two galley cars with 72 volts from (at least one of) the auxiliary generators, since the only electricity needed on the gallery cars was for lighting. The air conditioning was powered by Waukeska engines mounted on each coach, and heat was provided by the locomotive's steam generator. So either this was an experiment or one of the galley cars was deadheading, just my best guess. |

CB&Q E8 9972 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a Monday morning Dinky (commuter train), one of 30 Dinkys that the CB&Q dispatched in a 24 hour period out of Aurora to Chicago Monday through Friday, with a corresponding number returning. This particular train has the 7100 series coaches in tow, with one Budd bi-level coach at the rear of the train, and a power car carrying the markers. The class PA-14 7100 series coaches were built in the 1920's by the CB&Q with open ends, upgraded in 1949-1950 with enclosed ends and air conditioning, and given a paint scheme of forest green body, tan window panels, yellow stripes and lettering, aluminum roof, and black underbody. By the late 1960's, the PA-14's were withdrawn from suburban service, some lasted into the BN era in MOW service. |

CB&Q E8 9972 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 at Aurora, Illinois on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1953 (c/n 18314) on EMD Order 2059A, it became BN 9972 and later was rebuilt to E9Am 9906. It is seen here on the turntable behind the Aurora depot. There was no roundhouse or locomotive facilities, this turntable was used to turn suburban service locomotives for the return trip to Chicago. The Burlington had received its first six bi-level control cabs during the summer of 1965, so the days of this turntable's useful life were numbered. The sign says: ENGINES MUST STOP WITH TABLE IN BALANCE, not much of a challenge for E8's and E9's, which just fit the turntable. Likely the sign was for steam locomotives, typically 4-6-0's and later 4-6-2's. |

CB&Q 9973 w/Dinky in 1965 |
Description: |
Today, most or all diesel-powered commuter rail operations do not change the length (number of cars) of trains during off-hours thus accumulating many extra miles on the cars and using many gallons of extra diesel fuel. It seems to be a trade-off between today's labor costs vs. fuel and equipment costs. In this picture of Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy E8A 9973 leading a commuter run on Sunday July 5, 1964, and the "Q" obviously didn't expect many riders and cut the train to one push-pull gallery car. The trade-off was different. |

CB&Q E8 9973 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9973 and E9 9992 at Naperville, Illinois on August 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. On the left 9973 was bringing a Dinky to a station stop at Naperville, and on the right 9992 was passing with Train Number 1, the Denver Zephyr, on the first 28 miles of its overnight run to Denver 1034 miles west of Union Station in Chicago. Hard to believe, but this was a daily occurrence at 6:30 PM in Naperville during the 1960's. |

CB&Q E8 9974 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 10, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1953 (c/n 18316), became BN 9974 sometime after the merger date (3/2/1970), and was sold for scrap August 12, 1975 to Joseph Simon & Sons, Tacoma, Washington.Typically, a Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train) would require a power car to power the lighting in the coaches. As I understand it, some of the CB&Q E8's and E9's were modified to permit the locomotive's auxiliary generator to power the lights in up to two coaches, thus alleviating the need for the power car. The coaches were still (at the time of this photo) heated with steam, and the air conditioning was powered by propane fueled Waukesha engines on each coach. |
