Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken just West of SLOPE Tower in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6443, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during November of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of service. It's just come down the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a mixed-cargo freight bound for Altoona and points East. Two points of interest here. First, there's a streecar being transported on the first car of the train. And second, there's a Brakeman riding on a boxcar's roof about twelve cars back! Roy Healey Collection; #8 of 9. |
