Album Info:Here are 22 original photos of Pennsylvania Railroad subjects by Mr. Douglas C. Jones that were taken in and about Altoona, Pennsylvania, circa 1953. They are organized according to location: from the 24th Street Turntable in the West to the Erecting & Machine Shop in the East. The actual order of succession is not recorded. All of these images come from negatives I purchased during several eBay auctions conducted by Mr. Jeffrey K. Frangione in May, June, and July of 2021. * Repaired Album *

Visible in the middle distance are the Westbound Locomotive Ready Tracks, where #646 will be moved to await its next passenger helper assignment up "The Mountain." The twin smokestacks at the right mark the location of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.

Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4143, an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during October of 1913 and retired in March of 1953 after 40 years of faithful service. It's shifting some cars in and out of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops, partially visible in the foreground. The large structure across the mainline tracks is the Passenger Station's Trainshed. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8506, an ES-15M road switcher built by GM-EMD in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. In this context, it's just passed under the 9th Street Footbridge on its way back to the 7th Street Locomotive Ready Tracks for further assignment. The blurry streaks in the photo are the tracks of snowflakes on a frigid winter's day!

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6168, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during September of 1944 and retired in October of 1957 after just 13 years of revenue service. In this context, it's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Altoona Yards and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Note the Baldwin-built "Shark" on the adjoining track.

To its right is an unidentified "AF" Class diesel-electric locomotive awaiting repairs. In the foreground are numerous high-grade steel steam locomotive driving wheels, tires, and axles ~ most of which will never be installed.

Stored on its deck is a new cast-steel trailing truck which, at this point in history, may never be installed.
